How do they get more done every day? By finding their focus — and it isn’t on work all the time.

We asked some of the dynamic women on this year’s Female Founders 100 what helps them knock out the zillions of tasks on their to-do lists. Here’s what they had to say.

1. Block out time to think.

Football, food, films, fashion — pick an industry that makes people happy and, odds are, Dany Garcia has made it part of her portfolio at the Garcia Companies. “The goal,” she says, “is for the consumer to have a moment of delight, whether it’s watching a movie” made by her company Seven Bucks Productions, “having a bite of Salt & Straw” ice cream, “watching the XFL,” which she co-owns with Dwayne Johnson, “or putting on a GSTQ outfit that’s going to make them feel fabulous.” Garcia’s GSTQ fashion company is her “oldest IP.” The acronym informs her approach to business. At 15, she played the British national anthem, “God Save the Queen,” in band and was mesmerized by the name. “It became my mantra. There’s a tremendous amount of self-reflection and assessment.” –Sheila Marikar

So I just think about emails for that day,” says Éva Goicochea, of sexual wellness company Maude. “It’s a way to prioritize, but it’s also a way to feel like you completed the day and you just don’t have to think about anything else.”

3. Find your focus.

“I use the Pomodoro method of doing a task for 30 minutes and then taking a five-minute break,” says Erin Carpenter, founder of bodywear brand Nude Barre. “You just continue with that process until the task is done. A lot of times we end up procrastinating on things for various reasons. If you could just focus, and turn off all your notifications for even just 30 minutes, you can actually get a lot done.”

4. Stop multitasking.

“I have so many things coming at me all the time — so many wonderful things, and then so many tough things,” says Tory Burch, designer and founder of her eponymous fashion and accessories brand. “You have to take one thing at a time. That’s something I learned from my parents. If you’re thinking about everything at once, it’s almost too much to get through. I think you dissect it, take one item at a time, and do the best you can…[MORE]
